Talking with Diana Bordean, QA Complete Graduate – the Software Testing Course

“To succeed, you first have to fall in love with your work”. This principle has guided her since her very first steps in her career. She wanted to see if she had a real aptitude for IT. At first, she was self-taught: she looked things up, read, discovered what software testing means. She knew she had to put everything she learned in theory into practice, to see if she was heading in the right direction.

She is Diana Bordean. In the interview that follows, she shares her success story with you.

Looking back, after four months of courses, I saw fantastic progress!

1. How was your interaction with the software testing course mentors?

The mentors were very open to sharing their personal experience, and the examples they gave us throughout the training program were really useful. I still think fondly of some of them even now.

2. Is there a moment from the course sessions that stuck in your mind?

I remember the moment I got my first software application to test. The assignment was to find bugs. At the time I thought I'd chosen the wrong career, that I had no business being in that field, because I couldn't see anything wrong.

But looking back, after four months of courses, I can say I saw fantastic progress. My approach at the end was completely different. It was incredible how they managed to structure everything and make us think, instead of just handing us the information on a silver platter.

3. The biggest challenge?

There were many challenges. Every week brought new challenges, but I fondly remember an assignment where we had to work as a team, split an application into four parts, make a breakdown list, and write a test case for each scenario. The challenge was for all of us to work to the same pattern and present the project as a unified whole.

I think it was the most complex assignment, and that's when I realized how wonderful the Software Tester profession can be. The breakdown list made me build a structure for what I'm about to test, and I apply this method daily.

An actual interview session was organized, in which students simulated job interviews

4. Were you prepared for the job interview as a Software Tester?

At every interview I attended, I was asked about things I had already learned during the course sessions. Informal School of IT even organized an interview session, in which we, the students, took turns answering this kind of question.

Later, whenever I had to give an example to a recruiter, it came naturally to me. That's thanks to the numerous examples given by the software testing course mentors, examples drawn from real life that were easy to relate to.

5. How did your career evolve after the four months of courses?

Right after finishing the QA Complete – Software Testing course, I started testing as a freelancer for a while. Now I work at an IT company. It's much easier to absorb information and build it on top of a solid foundation.

Informal School of IT gave me this foundation, on top of which I intend to build, brick by brick.

A message for those reading this interview:

Don't be afraid to make a change. The road is harder at the start, but you're lucky enough to begin it alongside valuable people, practitioners, not theorists. Informal School of IT was, for me, the best investment in personal and professional development.
