"There's no age limit for dreams". A graduate's message for you

"Fate brought me to Informal School of IT", says Cosmin Bondoi.

He's 48 years old and is one of the people who hasn't missed a single Digital Job episode, the show where we talk about the life stories of our students. This time, though, it's no longer about others, but about himself.

It's his story, the story of someone who dreamed of the programmer profession. Because the dream is no longer just a dream: it's reality. Regardless of age, and of "hair that's starting to turn gray".

The beginning: Previous professional experience and the decision to change careers

For the last 20 years I worked in the legal field. After a 10-year stretch at a debt-enforcement office, I moved to a company that provided software for generating and managing debt-enforcement case files. My role was to provide support on implementation and to guide the operators, so as a Customer Support Specialist. It was a first step toward IT.

Although the work brought me satisfaction, my true passion, since I was young, had always been to work in software development. So, after a brief foray into the world of statistics, I decided it was time to try the big career change into programming. At 47.

The journey: Mentors, people who became my friends

At Informal School of IT, I met experienced and passionate mentors. I started with Intro in IT, the course for beginners, where I understood how the industry works. It was a start full of enthusiasm, precisely because of the passion with which Marius Herța, the mentor, taught every piece of information.

But the real journey into the secrets of programming began with the Java Development course. There I learned the basics of the programming language and concrete things about how it's applied in the real job market.

I met another passionate mentor, Dănuț Chindriș, someone I can now, without a doubt, call a friend. Even today I still ask him for programming advice, and his mentorship didn't stop at the end of the course, but continues to this day, long after graduation.

The destination: The dream became reality

Yes, I also had failures in interviews. But they weren't the end, just part of the journey. Thanks to perseverance, I met the right people, who saw my potential and gave me the chance to become a programmer. The dream from my youth is now a reality, even if my hair has started to turn gray.

I say this from my own experience: there's no age limit for dreams. If you're passionate and put in all the effort needed to fulfill your career wish, you have a great chance of success. The plan is simple: step out of your comfort zone, or out of the discomfort zone caused by hardship, and fight for your dreams. Keep just one motto in mind: Life Long Learning.
