Informal School of IT, now in Craiova too! The sixth location on the map

It was born in 2013, in Cluj-Napoca. It grew in Bucharest, Brașov, Iași, and Timișoara. Its story is being written today in Craiova too. The Informal School of IT is present in all 6 cities currently recognized on Romania's IT map.

On the 264th day of the year, beginnings were on everyone's lips. September 21 was about technology and new beginnings, about the future becoming present. In 1980 we celebrated the appearance of the world's first mobile phone. In 2018 we celebrate the shaping of new destinies in technology in a new Romanian city known for its IT dynamics. The prospect of a career in the only industry without unemployment has become present for technology enthusiasts living in Craiova, the Informal School of IT's newest location.

The Informal School of IT initiative

Is it a course? Is it a training? It's much more than that. It's a mindset, it's a whole philosophy of shaping an attitude and a way of being. It's much more complex. It's a context that we created through the Informal School of IT, so that people with vast IT experience meet people who are passionate and have potential. The former pass on their know-how to the latter. Besides purely technical information, students take part in soft-skills sessions, mock job interviews, in an interactive classroom environment where they practically apply all the knowledge they've gained. – explains Răzvan Voica, one of the School's founders, about the idea behind this project.

The September 21 launch event carried on the tradition of informal gatherings. Without ceremony, we cut the ribbon on the paths opening up for those eager to have an IT career, and applauded the first steps taken at the school by mentors and the first students.

Under the banner of passion for technology and education, of commitment and proven results, Carmen Ciulacu, site manager of the Informal School of IT Bucharest, further explains the mission of the people behind this initiative: "all our activity and all the efforts of this team of 120 people are aimed, without a doubt, at the quality of the student".

The future becomes present

About the technology of the future, the shape of new jobs, and the needs in education, Varujan Pambuccian, member of the Romanian Parliament, chairman of the Committee on Information Technology and Communications, spoke at the launch event of the Informal School of IT Craiova:

In traditional school, programs are made according to the teaching standards that exist in that particular university. And not according to a certain correlation that should exist between what graduates need to know and what's actually needed, at that moment, in the real world. That's why it's good for each of us to try not to limit ourselves to what we've learned and what we do, but to keep trying to move in a direction that seems fitting, interesting, forward-looking. To me it's an absolutely extraordinary thing: that alongside these institutionalized public initiatives, private initiatives have appeared in this field, where demand is very high.

Following a curriculum created and updated according to industry needs, more than 300 students are learning today in Bucharest, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, and Timișoara, where, as Sorin Stan, one of the School's founders, puts it, "things happen in such a way that the future becomes present".

"The Informal School of IT is changing the paradigm in education and vocational training, through a model focused on the student and their needs. The interaction in the classroom, the new teaching techniques we use, and the mentors' experience create this model's uniqueness", concluded George Ciulacu, site manager of the Informal School of IT Craiova, at the launch event.
