Talking with Andrei, JAVA Programming Course Graduate. „I Wanted to Prove to Myself That It's Not Too Late”

Talking with Andrei, JAVA Programming Course Graduate. „I Wanted to Prove to Myself That It's Not Too Late”

Today he dreams of becoming a Full Stack Developer and starting his own IT company. In 2013 he entered the world of programming with FoxPro, later worked as a database and front-end developer, but his encounter with JAVA at the IT and programming courses of the Informal School of IT changed his destiny.

At 28, he can say that success means following your intuition, backed by confidence in your own abilities, a lot of hard work and seriousness. And doors opened for him.

He talks about decisions and passion,  when – at one point – he remembers how, as a child, he dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. He loves animals just as much, but today everything that guides him in life is written like this:

if(goodEnough == false){

doBetter.start();

}

Andrei Bu. That's his full name — a self-driven and open-minded person. „Everything has changed”, he tells us calmly. From Negrești-Oaș, for 5 months, twice a week, he came to Cluj to learn JAVA.

Today he's a JAVA Developer.

„I wanted to prove to myself that it's not too late”

  1. Andrei, tell us about your job interview as a Java Developer!

The first interview is the hardest. Nerves and fear take over, but look, I want to pass along a few tips:
  • Stay calm: if you're not, you get confused and lose your way. Nobody will judge you if you don't succeed, but it's an experience you have to go through. I didn't pass my first interview, because of fear.
  • Be respectful: “Respect and you will be respected”.
  • Believe in yourself! You can do it!: the fewer nerves and the more confidence you have, the greater your chances of succeeding.
  • Don't be a robot: don't memorize the books or courses you read just to make sure you answer „by the book”. Understand what you read and answer exactly the way you understood it. Recruiters will correct you if you're wrong, because they too went through the same experience as you. They'll try to help you.
The second interview was a success for me, precisely because I checked off all the things above.
  1. From the course sessions, what do you remember most today?

The first 10 (top grade) I got on a homework assignment. Best sensation ever!  Read other success stories too: The Psychologist Who Became an IT Professional. 1. Fears?

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish the online Java Complete course for beginners. I knew I had to get through 2 exams, that I had a lot of homework to do, plus a final project. I wanted so badly to succeed. I wanted to prove to myself that it's not too late to change my path in a programmer's life, and look, I did it.
  1. What was it like learning from mentors?

Mentors are IT practitioners you interact with directly, and you even have fun sometimes. They explained things very well, concisely, and answered all our questions: there is no such thing as a stupid question.
  1. Biggest challenge?

Multithreading… hard to understand. But, in the end, I did it! Read other success stories too: How Do I Become a Programmer? Interview with a Software Developer Interview with Adina Gaciu, Graduate of the Intro in IT and Programming Courses
  1. Tell us what „flavor” your IT career has now.

„Tasty”. I really love what I do!
  1. Let's step back in time a bit:  what did you do before?

In 2013, I graduated from the Faculty of Sciences, Computer Science – Economics track. Back in college I learned the basics of programming in FoxPro, and only in my final year, C++, but I didn't feel drawn to that language at all. I quickly gave up the idea of doing a master's degree and started learning programming on my own. When I enrolled at the Informal School of IT, I was working as a database and front-end developer at a company in Negrești-Oaș.
  1. Why JAVA?

Even back in college I wished I knew JAVA. I saw that it's more flexible and has certain specific advantages that you don't find in other programming languages. With that in mind, I decided to take a course to help me retrain in JAVA.
  1. Let's imagine it's 2025. Where do you see yourself, professionally speaking?

On a beach in Ibiza? 🙂 Joking aside, I want to advance in my career as a Full Stack Developer or get into entrepreneurship. Only time will tell.
  1. And now, finally: why did you choose the Informal School of IT?

I chose the Informal School of IT because the people around me told me it's a serious institution. Confirmed!
